The opinions expressed in this post are solely those of the author and do not reflect the beliefs of any other participant in this league, any Xerox employees, nor those affiliated with the Draftime site.
Where to begin this mid-draft review? I’ll start with my thinking going in – as a three-time consecutive second place bridesmaid, I knew that I needed to change my drafting style to try to get over the hump. Long a proponent of compiling a stellar offensive starting line-up and patchworking a pitching staff together beginning at around Round 13, I shook things up this year by grabbing SPs with 2 of my first 5 picks. Let’s check back in on this at the end of the year to see if it made any difference. Players that I had my eye on and hoped to draft but were snagged just before I had the chance? – Longoria, Bruce, Cespedes, Chapman.
The first 2 rounds went predominantly as expected – Pujols went a bit high I suspect (high risk) as did Stanton (a lower risk IMO – as he’s primed for a 40HR season). Rick has already caught a tough break with Hanley out for 2 months (BTW – WBC sucks for exactly this reason!) Round 5 has 3 picks that I think could go a long way in deciding the fate of 3 teams – Craig, Castro, and Goldschmidt.
Steve – also seemingly attempting to shake up his drafting strategy – was the first manager to select a Reliever (Round 4), and it was almost another 2 full rounds before another RP was chosen, and then another 2 rounds before the Closer selection began in earnest (4 chosen in Round #8). Starting pitching on the other hand, has been flying off the board since Round 1 and at the time of this writing, 35 out of a possible 138 picks have been SPs – 25%!)
With the second half of the draft remaining – how will this end up in October? Well I know – but won’t spoil it for the rest of you……

I feel letdown. What a bunch of fluff. Where's the hard hitting "your team sucks and here is why" report from the past Claudio?
This weekend Wrigbone (Head) will do a full blown breakdown of every team. Call it 12 teams in 12 minutes...stay tuned!

You must have me mistaken with someone else Wrigbone - that's never been my style. I do look forward to hearing your masterpiece however.
Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
This is true. We are ALWAYS told not to pay for saves from Steve.. But that speaks VOLUMES of Craig Kimbrel... I have him as my 3rd ranked pitcher, overall... after Kershaw and Verlander... I wish I had him, put it that way...Claudio1965 wrote:The opinions expressed in this post are solely those of the author and do not reflect the beliefs of any other participant in this league, any Xerox employees, nor those affiliated with the Draftime site.

Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
forgot to mention... i know its better said before the delay, rather than after -- but I have been in a disaster recovery exercise since Thursday at 4pm. It was supposed to be a couple hours work on Thursday and then cruise control until Monday.. It has been nothing but. I thought I would be free to make my last selection, as i was actively checking-in earlier, but sometime this afternoon i got stuck hosting a web ex, and only just signed off recently.. 30 hours worked in the past two days, and I have to sign back on at 9am... (no crying in baseball) i will auto-pick if needbe. But i chose someone besides the top guy in my queue for 3 out of the past 4 rounds... so i have a hard time trusting my auto-pick instincts.. belated thanks in advance...
Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
Hey gang. Sorry I have not posted much. Busy week @ work and then I 'disappeared' from the office for a few hours today to catch my alma-mater Albany battle Duke on tv.
Here are some observations at the mid-point.
Brian - He's living on the edge more than usual trying for the knock out blow. [BLEEP] moving to the AL East concerned me and as much as I like Harper's potential, is it now? I like Rodney but like most closers, they can lose it quickly and history shows if anyone was a 1-year wonder, it could be him. The SP pool is deep, but with one starter through round 11, can he find enough gems to compete on the pitching side.
Jim - I always love new blood, you never know what to expect. He seems to have picked up on the importance of power in our unique 6x5 format. But right now he looks like he is tanking both steals and saves.
Claudio - Will this be his year? Solid draft so far, I'd expect nothing less. He is doing a good job of grabbing that player right before the positional tier falls off. Molina, ARam, Butler, and AJones seem significantly better than the next player drafted at each of their positions. Could he sustain a possible Braun suspension? He does not need closers during the draft and still do well in saves because he'll be the first to get any closer who takes that role mid season.
Joe - Another drafter that never seems to reach. I like his teams balance as he so far. He seems to draft need and not necessarily focus on best available
Rick - I appreciate the use of queues. He shows that when you are a few picks away you can set small queues to keep the draft moving. No need to overthink. Tough break w/Hanley. He's finished higher than the year before each year since he joined. He picked a few players I worried about keeping up their prior successes when I was setting up my lists (CC, Beltre, Weiters), but solid picks.
Kevin - I like the fact he started with top guys on scarce positions (2b SS C) and he has solid starters. His man crush on Melky has to end though.
Slash - Every one of his early hitting picks can help in all 6 categories, I'm just not sure about the guys he drafted in the middle.
Rich L - You can see the number crunching in his approach. After me, he is the number one candidate for keeping a running track of how his aggregate team is trending. He was my favorite team after round 4.
Jeff - I am not finishing with 1s in HR and SLG again this year. Totally changed my draft approach from the last few years, which obviously did not work out. I picked players who were more reliable to repeat prior stats then go with risks with upside. I am not focusing on the ratio stats only anymore.
Steve - Nothing but respect for his ability to construct a strong team from year to year. You know he (and Brian and Claudio) are always the most prepared going in. The fact that he took Kimbrel shows he's not locked into one approach. Formed great SP core even though he was one of the last to grab his first starter.
Rich R - The one guy from the core that I wish would have that one break out year and get out of his perpetual second division finish (old baseball term pre-expansion era for a team who is always in the bottom half of the standing). I tried to avoid question marks so far. He is drafting players that have hit their ceiling already.
Mark - I always think he drafts a good team, but they always seem to underperform. I like that he found power in his later picks, but he'll needs Joey Bats to carry them.
Finally, just a quick comment on the draft pace. I know it has frustrated some and it is obvious that we all are here for a different experience. This league was founded as an office league (I think Brian and Rich R are charter members) and when we were all in the same office it was a fun way to just find time to take a break from the work day to stop by and chat about the league. If I recall I declined an invite the first two years because I thought it would take away from my rooting interests and corrupt the way I watch baseball. When I finally agreed, I discovered this instead turned into a life long passion. BUT, I'd equate it to a pick up basketball game where everyone just shows to have fun, even if their skill levels are different, and we don't all have the competitive juices as everyone else and I think we have the wrong mix to get it to where our die-hards want it to be with a one-day draft with all intense managers. Even though we are not in the same office anymore, I still try to keep the spirit of this league as an office league by first going in-house to find replacements. (I am not in any way implying that our several non work mates are any less of a member, they actually are more into starting a discussion about how things are going than some of my co workers are). Personally, I actually like the pace because it gives me a chance to re-evaluate as we go so I can try to be more competitive with the guys who are more knowledgeable with the depth charts. I want you to know that being commissioner is no win. You are a a-hole when you remind someone they've been on the clock for a few hours (which I have done 5 times this draft), and you are an a-hole when you try to diffuse the folks who try to get everyone riled on the message boards to try to keep any mutiny to a minimum and try to keep this amicable.

Never thought I would ever get tired of looking at ( o )( o )
Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
Just weighing in here boys....Jeff, I may have drafted a couple of guys who had good years the last couple of seasons, but as for all my picks hitting their ceiling, I have to disagree. How can you measure a ceiling hit if we're not sure the ceiling has been hit? I'll admint Frank Francisco and Uggla were gambles, but no more so than Victor Martinez, Choo, or Victorino. I'm counting on Verlander, Hamels, Lester, and Hellickson for 45+ wins (although I think Vogelsong will be a factor too). I'm worried about steals and saves a bit, but if I can get some "ceiling" years out some guys this year, I think I can compete better. So we'll see, but I'm hoping to NOT finish in the bottom half this season!!!!!!!

I would set my sights on 2nd place then...Wrigbone wrote:Never thought I would ever get tired of looking at ( o )( o )
Ortiz (18) is a B( o )( o )B! He joins former 2012 5th-rounder-turn-2013-B( o )( o )B; Konerko (10) and Nelson Cruz (15) to form a nice trio of B( o )( o )B's... Total Recall style...
Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
this draft has been a new experience - little slower than i expected but not too bad - Commish you're doing a great job - and you're right, its a no win situation.

Hafner, Youkilis, Overbay, Vernon Wells --- did Cashman borrow Slash's 2007 Fantasy Baseball magazine??
Re: ACS Hackers 2013 draft discussion.
Please, Claudio, Cashman has nothing on me. Mine are from 2003 and 2005.
